Detoxification.

This is the first step in the recovery process when struggling with alcohol or drug dependence.

Detoxification is when your body clears itself of harmful substances, allowing you to begin your recovery journey with a healthier, more stable foundation. While detox can feel intimidating, understanding what happens during this stage can help ease fear and prepare you or your loved one for the road ahead.

At Tara Treatment Center, we use the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria to guide this process, so that you receive care tailored to your unique needs.

We work to ensure that your detox care is individualized, evidence-based and medically appropriate.

What Happens During Detox.

The Purpose of Detox

Detox is not about “curing” your addiction. Instead, its goal is to safely manage the physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms that occur when you stop using drugs or alcohol. Because these symptoms can sometimes be severe — or even life-threatening — it’s recommended that detox be done under medical supervision, rather than attempting it alone.

The Process of Detox

a. Evaluation
Upon entering a detox program at Tara Treatment Center, our medical team conducts an evaluation. This includes:

  • Screening for the type of substance used, how long, and in what amounts

  • Checking for co-occurring medical or mental health conditions

  • Developing a personalized detox plan

b. Stabilization
During this stage, the focus is on supporting you physically and emotionally as your body adjusts. This may involve:

  • Medications to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings

  • Monitoring vital signs to ensure safety

  • Counseling and reassurance to help manage anxiety or fear

c. Transition to Treatment
Detox alone is not treatment. Once your withdrawal symptoms have subsided and your body is stabilized, you are encouraged to move into a personalized treatment program. This step is critical for addressing the psychological and behavioral aspects of addiction.

What Withdrawal Feels Like

Withdrawal symptoms vary depending on the substance, the duration of use and the your overall health. Some common symptoms include:

  • Anxiety or depression

  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

  • Sweating and shaking

  • Headaches or body aches

  • Insomnia or vivid dreams

  • Intense cravings

For substances like alcohol, opioids or benzodiazepines, withdrawal requires medical care. This is why medically supervised detox is the safest path.

The Importance of Medical Support

Medical detox provides:

  • Safety: Doctors and nurses can respond immediately if complications arise.

  • Comfort: Medications and therapies reduce the intensity of symptoms.

  • Structure: Supportive care creates a stable environment for the transition to recovery.

Next Step After Detox

Completing detox is a powerful achievement, but it’s just the beginning. Recovery is an ongoing journey that includes therapy, lifestyle changes and building supportive relationships. Detox clears the body; treatment helps heal the mind and spirit.
